The Orchestra has been invited to contribute these two short charity concerts towards a number of activities taking place in Priory Park on St. George's Day. Sponsored by the Royal Society of St. George and the Mayor's Charity.

THE END OF THE WAR: SIXTY YEARS ON

The Royal British Legion is supporting the Orchestra in a commemorative charity concert.

The Church commissioned the concert as part of their "Music at Highlands" series, and it is a commemorative charity event marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

In between the music we are adding memorabilia from the War Years, such as speeches and announcements from the time, search lights and a black-out. The audience will hear the 'All Clear' to indicate that it is safe to leave the building!

A GUIDE TO THE ORCHESTRA

Each item in this programme features a specific orchestral instrument or group of instruments.

The programme includes

  • Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (Britten),
  • Carnival of the Animals (Saint Saens),
  • Jaws and Jurassic Park (Williams)
  • Tubby the Tuba (a narrated musical story featuring Tubby and his Little Tune, his friend the Bullfrog and the famous conductor, Signor Pizzicato).
  • and a few other favourites which show off the full range of orchestral instruments

Tickets are £8 for adults, £7 for senior citizens and £5 for students and children.

These performances will be presented in the Orchestra's characteristic endearing style and compered by the conductor. Authentic instruments will be used such as harpsichord and valveless horns, and other early instruments will be on display to view and even try out during the interval.

The performances are entitled "CLASSICAL STARS" after the BBC2 television competition last Summer, in which 18 promising young musicians were judged over several weeks by a prestigious panel of acclaimed professional music personalities to find the ultimate winner of a top recording deal. Two of the finalists in the competition, Ben MacDougall (flute) and Jeanine Thorpe (violin), are soloists in this programme of light classical music.

The programme includes :
